On November 7th, a special Korean cultural tour was held by Onehada, a nonprofit organization, to help Koreans and Sakhalin compatriots settle in Korea and start a new life. This was hosted by Mapo-gu and organized by Culture and Road Cultural Heritage Utilization Research Institute, “Yangwhajin Modern History Boat Tour.” It was a fun time learning about Seoul’s modern history while exploring the boat tour.

Modern history of Seoul encountered on the sea

This boat tour started from Yanghwajin, where the Han River and Anyangcheon meet, and proceeded to tour historical sites in Seoul. At the Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery, we highlighted the dedicated lives of missionaries who created important moments in modern Korean history, and conveyed to participants the historical background deeply rooted in Korean society.
Especially for Koryo people and Sakhalin compatriots, it was an important time to feel the historical connection with Korea. It also provided a special experience of taking in Seoul’s past and present at a glance by passing through Yanghwanaru and Seongsan Bridge, which were commercial centers during the Joseon Dynasty.
Hearts connected through culture, moments of emotion

Participants unanimously agreed that this sea tour was not just a simple tour, but an opportunity to understand Korean culture and gain confidence in settling down .
One participant said, “I was deeply moved by the stories of missionaries’ dedication and sacrifice for Korea. As a fellow Korean, I felt proud and began to look at life in Korea in a more positive light.”
Another participant expressed his gratitude, saying, “I was able to learn about the historical significance of Yanghwajin, and the experiences of playing the gayageum, telling historical stories, and making boat songs were so much fun. I participated with my friends, and we all had a great time.”
